Steven Miller

Hello and welcome to the my 1st column of the season, its been a while so I thought it was about time.

We are about a month into the season and as usual we have had some good performances, some bad performances and some average performances.

We started the season against Southwich where we found ourselves 2-0 up and cruising thanks to an own goal and a fantastic team goal eventually turned in by last year’s top scorer Dean Ovenden. Inexplicably though we let our concentration slip and conceded 2 sloppy goals in a crazy 5 minute spell, adversity seem to bring out the best in us though and we scored 2 late goals through an Ally Guinan lob and a crisp Ovenden strike to take the game 4-2.

Next up was Ultras and with regular keeper Gary Jones getting on loads of birds in Magaluf, Lewis “The Cat” Williams donned the gloves. In truth he never had a save to make as we played good football albeit against a poor team to win comfortably 4-0 with 2 goals from Ovenden, 1 from Sackett and a goal from new signing Conor Smith making him the clubs youngest ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 298 days.

We then faced 9G design missing several key players and Nick Heydon making his goalkeeping debut. Despite being the better side for long periods we conceded 2 sloppy goals and had to come from behind twice thanks to a Lewis Williams brace.

The Orb came next and a fairly routine 5-1 victory thanks to a hat trick from Dean Ovenden, a wonder goal from Dean Stanley and a decent finish from myself. Again we missed many chances and against a better side we would have been punished.

Lastly came the Challenge Cup defeat to The Acorn, possibly the dirtiest most horrible bunch of chavs I’ve ever come across. What didn’t help matters was the fact we were missing 3 key players in Sam Haynes, Dean Ovenden and Adam Sackett. Lewis Williams decided he would let down all his teammates by not turning up and not bothering to get in touch to explain why. He will be the one to suffer though as he wont be included in the squad for the Little Albion game. Let’s not forget the performance we put in though, which was the worst I can remember from us since the defeat to Jesters in the league last year, which all but ended our hopes of promotion. Only about 4 players were on their game yesterday we lacked drive, passion and desire, which should be the minimum any team should have. Saying that though we had our chances in the 1st half with both Noddy and Ally going close but we were made to pay for those missing chances as one long ball and one individual error allowed Acorn to score 2 poor goals. After that we offered very little going forward and seemed to just accept defeat with a whimper.

Overall I am happy we are unbeaten in the league after a month but I am frustrated at certain aspects of our team. Firstly we are still making the same mistakes. I can’t remember anyone scoring a good goal against us and most of the goals we do concede could be stopped just by simple talking and following your man. We have to defend from the front and as a team, everyone taking responsibility for their role.

Secondly and for me most frustrating is the fact I have not been able to name my strongest team at all this season. We have 18 players signed on to the club and not once have I had to leave anyone out of the 14. I need people to be available for selection; to only have 11 players available as has happened twice this year is not acceptable. I have players who want to sign for us but so far I have given the players we have a chance. I know if we have our best 11 on the pitch we can out play any team in this league
