Lesson 2: Notes

In this lesson, you will learn about:

You need to know about these concepts because they tell you which notes appear on which lines in the music.

Notes

In western music, names of letters of the alphabet are assigned to each pitch.

Only the first seven letters of the alphabet are used:
A, B, C, D, E, F and G. These letters are repeated in each octave.

Staffs

Pitches are represented graphically on a set of lines called a staff (it may also be called a stave).

There are five horizontal lines in the staff, and notes can be placed on both the lines of the staff and the spaces between the lines.

This is a staff

This staff has notes on it.
Each note represents a specific pitch.
