Lesson 3: Sharps and Flats

In this lesson, you are learning about:

Key Signatures

Oftentimes some notes are always sharp or flat in the music.

When this happens, the sharp or flat is placed in the key signature instead of placing a sharp or flat in front of the note every time it appears.

Sharps or flats in the key signature indicate that every note with the same name should be a sharp or a flat.

If the composer so desires, sharps, flats and natural signs can be used to temporarily cancel the effect of the key signature.

In the key signature above, sharp signs appear on the line and space for F and C respectively.

This means that every F and C in the music is actually F sharp and C sharp (unless changed by a natural or flat).

Key signatures normally appear after the clef.

Display all possible key signatures.
