In this lesson, you are learning about:

Dotted Notes

In addition to whole notes, half notes, and so on, dots are also used to indicate rhythm.

A dot adds half the value to the note that immediately precedes the dot.

For example, if a whole note gets 4 beats, then:

  • A dotted whole note gets 6 beats

  • A dotted half note gets 3 beats.

  • A dotted quarter note gets 1 1/2 beats.

Sample dotted rhythms:
Blue lines below indicate the beats and sub-beats (4 beats per measure, quarter note gets beat).
The notes with 3 tails are 32nd notes (two 32nds = one 16th). Double-dots are infrequently used.
