Lesson 4: Rhythm

How do I know when one bar ends
and another begins?

Can a note cross a bar line?

Most music includes bar lines, which are just vertical lines inserted in the staff. This provides a convenient way to mark the bars.

There are 3 kinds of bar lines:

  • Regular bar line.

  • Double bar, sometimes used to mark a certain dividing point in the music, for example, right before a key change.

  • Fine bar, placed at the end of the music.

By the way, bars are also called measures.

Sometimes the value of the notes do not conveniently fit into a single bar.

In these situations, notes are tied together across bar lines. This gives the notes the desired rhythmic value.

 Play example above.
