What happens if a note changes off the beat?

You hear a catchy rhythm!

This type of rhythm is called syncopation. While used in many kinds of music, it is particularly prevalent in jazz and contemporary music.

Here are some examples. Blue lines indicate the beat.

In these recordings, a pulsing note has been added in the base clef to serve as a metronome.
