AMA wins WNCAA Seniors A cage title  

 

AMA Computer University completed a Cinderella finish yesterday (Sunday) when it upended Lyceum of the Philippines , 59-45, to sweep the senior A best-of-three finals in the WNCAA 36th tournament at the SSC gym.

Paula Marie Lontok’s twinner in the final 1:45 of the match gave the Lady Titans their biggest lead, 55-40.

AMA dropped both its elimination round games against 33rd and 35th season champion Lyceum, 63-42, on August 14 and 55-49 on September 18.

 “We learned from our previous mistakes.  We applied tougher defense this time,” said AMA mentor Charmaine Salalila, whose wards limited the Lady Pirates to only 10 points in the payoff period.

AMA, one of three newcomers this season along with La Consolacion College and World Citi Colleges, also won Game 1 on Saturday, 57-33.

 

In the senior B finals, San Beda College Alabang leaned on the torrid shooting of Lovette Macalinga to beat St. Scholastica’s College, 63-47, and leveled their best-of-three series at 1-1.

Macalinga led all scorers with 19 points while getting 15 markers from Angelica Jeresano.

St. Scho took Game 1, 52-44.

They will dispute the championship next Saturday, October 22.

 

Defending junior champion De La Salle Zobel nipped Miriam College , 52-50, to take Game 1 of their best-of-three series.  

In the opener, Chiang Kai Shek College defeated SBCA, 61-47, for third place in the junior division.

The WNCAA 36th season is being supported by adidas, Penshoppe, Mikasa, Molten, Cherifer vitamin, Rio 106.7 and ABC 5.

 

The senior A MVP trophy went to Lyceum’s April Lualhati who was joined in the Mythical Five by teammate Divina Reyes, AMA’s Lontok and Happy Ong and Anne Zimmerman of third placer Centro Escolar University .

 

Named champion coach was AMA’s Sacalila.   

 

SBCA’s Lariza Maralit received the senior B Most Valuable Player award and earned a slot in the Mythical Five, along with Miriam’s Vie Reyes, St. Scho’s Pearl Mallada, University of Asia & the Pacific’s Elaine Rojas and host Emilio Aguinaldo University’s Dian Cas.
