Maria's Story
She's got the genki energy to keep up with Ginji.  She's got a bust line that beats Hevn's.  She can flamenco.  She's 100 years old...… ?!  Well, technically she's still 99, but nobody else is that picky.  Given that she still looks like she's in her mid-20's, that should be a strong hint that she's not just some pretty Spanish immigrant fortune-teller living in the back streets of Shinjuku.  She's a true witch, and a pretty darn powerful one at that.  Besides being able to make herself look young, she is capable of a lot of high-level spells.  Not much of one for mass amounts of collateral damage, of which I think she is capable, her preference is for far more subtle things like manipulation and divination.  She is considered an authority on card magic (ie: tarot).

About 10 years ago, Ban lived with Maria, if just for a short time.  Apparently, he took off without any warning, though for what reason only Ban knows.  There doesn't seem to be any bad blood between the two, above the usual teen dislike of authority figures, and Ban's normal sour temper anyway.

On a side note, Maria is the only big-chested woman, likely on the planet, that Ban has absolutely NO desire to grope.  I guess knowing she's really 99 years old can kill the letch even in Ban.

SPOILERS (black on black, so just highlight to read)
Maria's teacher in magic was none other than Ban's grandmother, the Witch Queen. Along with Pierre De Medicci (aka: Lucifer), she studied spell craft around the time of World War II. There are very vague hints of a former relationship between Pierre and Maria, but it never really comes to anything.

I'm assuming Maria was a trusted student, since Ban was sent to her when the difficulties with his family came up. Nothing about that particular part in Ban's life is ever clearly stated, however. Perhaps after running away from Maria, is when he fell in with Himiko and her brother?
