Gen's Story
To most people, he’s just an old man running a little medicine shop on the fringes of Mugenjou.  He doesn’t have any strange powers, nor is grand daughter Ren that great in a fight.  They get by mostly by making themselves as innocuous as possible.

Gen is an exceptionally good pharmacist, with a well stocked larder of items, including even rare and strange things (that root that he used for the blood infusion to Emishi?  Can’t be common…).

That is all, of course, just a front.  Besides being good with medicine, Gen is an expert with computers, and he has an array in the hidden back room of his house that only MakubeX could top.  The boy King of Lower Town is certainly the only one who can get through the protections Gen has on his systems.  What he’s doing with all that computer hardware is another story.  A good chunk of it is devoted towards creating what will be the only accurate (as possible for a place that can change drastically on a regular basis) map of Lower Town.

What else it could be used for, no one bothered to ask.

SPOILERS (black on black, so just highlight to read)
Gen is the one responsible for raising MakubeX, much as Teshimine raised Ginji.  Gen is enough of a genius in mathematics and computers to have given MakubeX a very good start on both subjects.  When the two parted ways isn’t mentioned.

Besides being an accredited mathematical genius, Gen is also named one of the greatest architects of the 20th century.  After the Great Conflagration that razed a goodly piece of Shinjuku, Gen was the one who designed the high-tech skyscraper that was to be built on the ruins.  The building was to be called “Babylon Tower”.  Sound familiar?  …scrap the ‘tower’ part, change it to ‘city’…  Yup.  Gen designed the core of what is now Mugenjou.  There’s evidence he’s still connected to some upper level group too, be it Babylon City or perhaps even the Brain Trust.  Maybe there are some ulterior motives to the map-making?
