Paul's Story
Paul is the owner of the Honky Tonk Café,
and a master at making good coffee. Since it's become the unofficial
base-of-operations for Get Backers, and all their friends, he's fallen into
a position much like that of a faculty advisor to a boisterous school club.
He dispenses advice and (in the end, free) coffee, and keeps an
ear open to listen whenever someone wants to talk. He has managed
to console or perk up quite a few down-in-the-dumps people on more than one
occasion with a few well-placed words. He can be sharp with people
( read: Ban) on occasion. Not that it ever avails him much, though.
By this point, he's mostly accustomed to the random damage to the store's interior that Ban and Ginji always seem to cause (a PO'ed Ban crushes a goodly number of coffee cups), and I think he's given up on Ban and Ginji ever paying back the massive tab they've run up.
A total non-combatant, he keeps himself as far out out of the physical side of the GB business as he can.
SPOILERS (black
on black, so highlight to read)
Paul is far more immersed in the whole Mugenjou business
than many people know. Heck, he knows a lot more about just about everything
than anybody knows. At one point in time, he was known as the man to come to
if one wanted to buy information relating to anything at all about Under Shinjuku.
In volume 9, while GB and Co. are raising havoc in Mugenjou itself, Teshimine stops by the café. He's extraordinarily polite to Paul, and it's obvious they've met at least a couple times before. When Teshimine leaves, he purposely forgets a floppy disc. The request that Paul give it to Ginji is implicit. In volume 19, the disc finally comes out again, and Paul asks Kadz to look into something he found on it. What exactly the disc contains isn't known, but what it means is that GB just got itself a powerful enemy-- the "god" of Mugenjou.
However, Paul has told only Shido and Kadz about that disc so far.
